51% career win rate
C&P West Ham United are pondering a move for Rafa Benitez at the end of the season as a possible replacement for Sam Allardyce.
The Hammers have won just one of their last 12 Premier League games, piling the pressure on manager Allardyce despite a strong first half of the season.
Allardyce, who has been in charge for almost four years, is expected to leave Upton Park in the summer when his contract expires.
That would leave West Ham needing a new manager in their final season at Upton Park before the move to the Olympic Stadium in 2016 - and the Hammers hierarchy could look to make an ambitious appointment.
Rafa Benitez could make a shock return to the Premier League with West Ham.
The Spaniard is currently managing in Italy with Napoli, but will also be out of contract come the summer and West Ham are considering a move to hire Benitez.
The 54-year-old famously won the Champions League during his time in charge of Liverpool, and boasts a 51% win percentage over his career as manager of Real Madrid B, Villarreal, Osasuna, Extremadura, Tenerife, Valencia, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea and Napoli.a

It's not the fact he played Sterling. Its the fact that he has 2 specialist strikers that he's just bought and he chose not to play them. If he had Sturrige available he wouldnt have played Sterling there.
a) he's admitting he f'd up with his purchases b) he's telling his new purchases that someone who doesnt play that role in the team is better than both of them c) all of last season Liverpool played with at least 1 proper striker, mostly 2.
I'm not saying its miraculous. I'm just saying that he solves problems even if its unorthodox.
I cant remember Allardyce ever admitting he's made mistakes transfer wise. He still plays jarvis!

Napoli kick off at Dinamo Moscow at 5pm so Benitez presumably had a plane waiting after lunch at Canary Wharf?

also sterling has been playing as a forward for years, mainly wide, but sometimes through the middle, in fact much of the time he played in place of a recognised striker it was more like a false nine. he isnt a target man and they didnt play that way so him playing more centrally is never going to be a problem for him as the balls are played into space for him to run onto.

Re: Benitez

you cant base your signings purely on their stats, a good manager has to pick the right players for the style he wants to play, players who he feels will fit in, its about the team not eleven individuals.
sorry but you are being quite naive.

Klopp is now 10th after having a bad start. He's turned it around even with the injuries and loss of key players. Some managers just dont have it in them to do that. You cant discount Klopps record with 1 bad season considering how much else he's done.
If you told me we could get a striker who scored 23 in 46 matches for Milan, 13 in 33 for Italy for $16m i'd bite your hand off. Yes, its a gamble and it didnt work. But it's not like either him or Lambert had bad records.
And saying sterling was a striker at qpr as a kid is like saying gareth bale should fill in at left back for Madrid. It takes guts to drop 2 specialist players and put someone in to lead the line to solve mistakes that you made.

Don't even think its fair to say he's a cheque book manager, if I'm honest. In fact, his transfer record is pretty average.
All his successes have come early, with what he's inherited, so he's clearly a very decent organiser and motivator in the short term.
Beyond that, his record isn't great.

klopp seems to have gone into reverse since losing his best two players in recent years? koeman brought in his own players, most importantly pelle and tadic. i know little about simeone and how he has reshaped his team, or not.
sterling was and is a forward, and was a striker when on the books of qpr so not exactly surprising that he has managed to fill in well up front. not sure you can cite him as being a proper manager when he bought a player known for trouble, who never really did that well in , how has been pretty shit and a waste of moneyengland and who will no doubt cost them a fair bit to get rid of, and rickie lambert who has been pretty poor. you mention he offered a solution rather than asking to open the chequebook, to be honest you have no idea whether he asked for more funds for strikers or not, i would imagine with the money he wasted on those two mentioned that liverpool would have wanted him to out one or both before letting him near the sweetie jar again.

"threesixty you could say that aout almost any manager, he is only as good as his players"
Not so. Look at Diego Simione, look at Koeman. Even Klopp. Those are managers that "add value".
They outperform given the money they have available. Look how Rodgers has used Sterling as a forward instead of bleating on about how his attackers arent doing anything. He bought 2 proper strikers (Balottelli had scored plenty in Serie A last year) yet he played Sterling instead. That's a proper manager in my book. Someone who offers solutions instead of opening a cheque book to solve the issue all the time.
When Benitez was at Liverpool his excuse for not challenging for the league was simply that he need more world class players. He had Gerrard, Torrez, Alonso etc... but needed more compared to Chelsea and Man U. He never thought about bringing some of the youth in and moulding them into what he needed. Or changing things around a bit. He bought loads of crap as well (his poundland for players was over 15m it seems).
It just felt like he wouldnt even bother trying and just went for cups because he had more chance of winning.
If you have the money to give him he'll win, I dont doubt that. But so will lots of managers. I just think West Ham will never have that type of money so we need someone who can operate without with less.

threesixty you could say that aout almost any manager, he is only as good as his players and if he isnt allowed to chose the players he wants for his system them i would imagine a lot of managers may struggle. as for expenditure there was n article recently that showed that in most sports around the world the team that spends the most on wages has the most success, so success seemingly is tied to expenditure for the most part.

He's a good manager. But he's a cheque book manager. That's my only problem with him. He's like Mancini. His results are directly proportional to how much he spends.
I dont think he's a coach that can solve problems without a cheque book. Thats where Howe, Pardew, Rodgers etc.. even Mourinho are better.
If we don't have a great budget he wont get us anything.
